The Minolta SRT 101 was my first film camera, paired with a Minolta MD 28–70mm f/3.5–4.8 zoom. Looking back, it was a pretty good way to start. There was no automatic exposure to rely on and very little between me and the basic mechanics of taking a photograph.
More importantly, the camera immediately felt like a proper object. The SRT 101 is heavy, solid, and built like a tank. There are smaller and more advanced film cameras, but few give you quite the same feeling when you pick them up and wind the lever.
That physical character is still one of the main reasons I like it. The controls feel deliberate, the body has a reassuring weight in your hands, and almost everything you need is mechanical. More than half a century after its introduction in 1966, that simplicity is also a large part of why so many SRT 101 bodies are still usable today.

The specifications are simple by modern standards, but that is the point. The shutter itself is mechanical, so the camera continues to take photographs even if the battery dies; the battery is only needed for the meter.
Built Like a Tank, in a Good Way
The first thing you notice about the SRT 101 is the weight. This is not a lightweight camera that disappears in a jacket pocket, and it does not try to be one.
The metal body feels dense and substantial, especially with a proper Minolta lens attached. Personally, I like that. It sits nicely in the hands and gives the camera a sense of stability that lighter plastic bodies simply do not have.
The film advance also contributes to the experience. Winding the lever, adjusting the shutter-speed dial, turning the aperture ring, focusing manually and finally pressing the shutter makes each frame feel deliberate. There is enough resistance in the controls to feel mechanical without the camera becoming awkward to use.
If your priority is the lightest possible travel setup, an SRT 101 probably would not be my first recommendation. If you enjoy cameras partly because of how they feel as physical objects, though, it has a lot of charm.
A Completely Manual Camera
The SRT 101 does not have aperture priority, shutter priority or Program mode. You choose the aperture and shutter speed yourself, focus the lens, check the meter and take the photograph.
That can sound intimidating if it is your first film camera, but the process becomes straightforward surprisingly quickly. In fact, starting with the SRT 101 forced me to understand exposure rather than allowing the camera to make those decisions in the background.
The shutter runs mechanically from 1 second to 1/1000 second, plus Bulb for long exposures. Earlier SRT 101 versions also include mirror lock-up as well as depth-of-field preview, although Minolta changed some details during the camera's long production run and later versions dropped the mirror-lock function.
If you are looking for your first camera specifically because you want to learn aperture, shutter speed and manual exposure, the SRT 101 makes a lot of sense. I would also include it alongside the cameras in our best film cameras for beginners, although it asks a little more from the photographer than something like a Minolta X-700.
The CLC Exposure Meter
The SRT 101 was technically quite advanced when it appeared. Minolta equipped it with its CLC — Contrast Light Compensator — metering system, using two CdS cells inside the prism to measure light through the lens.
Instead of giving you a digital number, the camera uses a match-needle system in the viewfinder. One needle reacts to the light level, while another represents your chosen shutter speed, aperture and film speed. Adjust the settings until the indicators line up and you have the camera's suggested exposure.
It is a very intuitive system once you understand what you are looking at. You can also see the selected shutter speed in the finder, so you do not always need to take the camera away from your eye while working.
The two-cell CLC system was designed to handle scenes with contrasting bright and dark areas better than a simple single-cell meter. That does not turn a 1960s meter into modern matrix metering, but it was sophisticated technology for the period.
I would still treat any surviving meter as a useful guide rather than unquestionable truth. These cameras are decades old, and calibration, CdS cells and battery voltage can all affect the reading. If yours seems inconsistent, compare it against a known-good meter or phone app before trusting an important roll.
And if the meter stops working completely, the camera is not finished. You can continue shooting manually with an external meter or something like the Sunny 16 rule.
The Battery Is the One Awkward Part
Originally, the SRT 101 used a PX625 1.35V mercury battery for its exposure meter. Those batteries are now obsolete in most markets, which means simply buying whatever modern battery fits physically is not necessarily the perfect solution.
Modern 625-style alkaline cells are commonly 1.5V rather than 1.35V, and that voltage difference can shift the meter reading. How much it matters can vary from one camera to another, especially after decades of aging and previous calibration.
The cleaner options are a 1.35V zinc-air replacement such as a WeinCell, a suitable voltage-reducing adapter, or having the meter recalibrated for a modern battery. The important thing is that this problem affects only the light meter. The shutter and the rest of the camera remain functional without a battery.
For me, that is a much nicer kind of vintage-camera problem than owning an electronically dependent body that becomes a paperweight when something on the circuit board fails.
The Minolta Lens System Is One of Its Best Features
One of the strongest reasons to consider an SRT 101 today is the Minolta manual-focus lens ecosystem.
The camera belongs to the Minolta SR-mount family, and the later MC and MD lenses remain broadly compatible with the SRT 101. Minolta evolved the mount over the years by adding additional mechanical coupling rather than replacing the system completely, so there is a large selection of primes and zooms available.
My first setup was the SRT 101 with the Minolta MD 28–70mm f/3.5–4.8. A zoom like that is practical when you are just starting because you can experiment with different focal lengths without immediately buying several lenses.
The Minolta system is also appealing because prices have generally avoided some of the hype surrounding better-known vintage systems. Common camera-and-lens combinations still appear at relatively modest used-market prices; recent 2026 sales for SRT 101 kits with 50mm lenses ranged widely depending on condition, from inexpensive untested examples to more costly tested or premium-condition bodies.
Condition matters much more than finding the absolute cheapest one. I would happily pay more for a camera with confirmed shutter speeds, a working meter and clean seals rather than save money on an unknown body.
The MD 50mm f/1.7 Is the Safe Choice
If I were buying an SRT 101 today and wanted one simple lens, I would probably start with the Minolta MD 50mm f/1.7.
It is not an exotic lens, and that is exactly why it makes sense. The 50mm focal length is useful for everyday photography, portraits, street scenes and learning composition, while f/1.7 gives you much more room when the light gets weaker than a typical zoom lens.
The later MD 50mm f/1.7 is a compact six-element lens with a minimum focusing distance of about 0.45m, and it is one of the more common Minolta standard lenses.
There are faster and more collectible Minolta 50mm lenses, including f/1.4 options, but you do not need them to enjoy the SRT 101. The 50mm f/1.7 is simply a solid, sensible pairing: small enough to balance the heavy body, fast enough for most situations, and usually much easier to justify financially.
What Is It Like to Shoot Today?
The SRT 101 feels old, but not obsolete.
There is no autofocus, auto exposure, LCD or motorized film advance. You decide everything yourself, and that naturally slows the process down. For some photographers that will be inconvenient; for others it is exactly the reason to buy one.
The viewfinder's central microprism takes a little practice compared with later split-image screens, especially in poor light. The camera is also heavy enough that you notice it after carrying it all day.
None of those things bother me much because the basic experience is so good. The SRT 101 feels like a machine rather than an electronic device, and operating it becomes part of taking the photograph.
Is the Minolta SRT 101 Good for Beginners?
I think it can be, with one condition: you actually want to learn manual photography.
If you want a camera that you can immediately load and use without thinking about exposure, there are easier choices. Something like the Minolta X-700 gives you automation while retaining the same general manual-focus experience.
The SRT 101 is different. It makes you focus, meter and choose your settings for every frame. That is more work, but it also means aperture, shutter speed and ISO stop being abstract concepts fairly quickly.
It certainly worked that way for me. Starting film photography with the SRT 101 meant I could not avoid learning the fundamentals, and I think that made later cameras much easier to understand.
Is the Minolta SRT 101 Still Worth Buying?
Yes — provided you want what the SRT 101 actually offers.
It is not the camera I would recommend to someone looking for automation, portability or the easiest possible first roll. It is heavy, completely manual, and its original battery situation requires a little attention.
But those weaknesses are also closely connected to what makes the camera appealing. It is solid, mechanically simple, satisfying to use and backed by an excellent range of Minolta lenses that has not become absurdly expensive.
There are technically more capable film cameras. I own and have used cameras that are quicker, lighter and easier to shoot. But the SRT 101 still has something that makes me want to pick it up.
Maybe part of that is because it was my first film camera. Even without the nostalgia, though, I think it remains one of the better ways to experience a classic mechanical 35mm SLR without paying purely for the name on the prism.
For a first lens, the MD 50mm f/1.7 is the safe recommendation. Add a wider or longer Rokkor later once you know what you actually photograph.
And if you find an SRT 101 in good condition, load a roll, match the needle and go shoot. The camera does not need much more than that.
